Eat Me came from the idea that the female body is something to be consumed and enjoyed, and explores the complications that arise from being perceived that way as a woman. The title references the term “cheesecake,” which was used in the past to describe pin-up imagery intended for the male gaze. After being compared to a “cheesecake,” Júlia found the term troubling especially in a contemporary context yet recognized that women are still often viewed through that lens. In response, she incorporates imagery from 1950s gentlemen’s magazines into her work. The exhibition features a range of mixed media pieces as well as artist books created by Júlia.
